The first day in Paris saw a visit to the Eiffel Tower.
This sight did not disappoint.
The majestic structure rises above any other buildings in
central Paris. In person, the tower itself seemed much taller, and what I have
failed to notice is the colour of the tower, an off brown, almost coffee
colour. I was always under the impression that it was silver?!
Now, we were recommended before leaving for the trip to find
the line up that allowed us to climb up the tower by stairs, and that we did.
The climb scared the crap out of me.
It was high, it was windy! At some points you literally were
near the edge of the tower’s sides, looking over the windy line ups of
tourists! What got to me the most was the miniature holes that the steps had
(guess it was for drainage purpose?). It just felt like the steps were thin,
and at any point in time, you could fall right through! We got up to the first
level, then the second. Each step saw my hand grip harder onto the railing!
The view up from above was breathtaking!
Paris is a beautiful city. The river dissecting the city,
splitting at an island where Notre Dame rises. The Paris Opera House’s dome
stood out with its golden colour.
Never have I been happier to be taking 42 flights of stairs
down!
Our next stop we visited the Champs Ellysees.
Venturing from the Eiffel Tower along the streets of Paris,
you really get to appreciate the architecture of the city. Building to
building, each one more impressive than the next.
Now, what was also impressive was the lunch. Real French
Onion soup… magnificent! What I did NOT like was how my glass of Perrier cost
8.50 Euros!!!! And, is it just me, or do French people talk with a string
attached to their noses?!?! =)
The Champs Ellysees was impressive. The street was lined
with all the brands you can think of! I do not speak French and can only
recognize what I would imagine to be smaller than 0.1% of the words. The word
SOLDES! Apparently stores in the European Union can only advertise Sales once a
year, and I so happen to be here during that time!
A local friend explained that any stores that would like to
have a second sale of any sort would have to apply for the right to do so with
the Mayor’s office. Similarly, the cost of bread has a ceiling set, to ensure
affordability of the staple food. Can Vancouver have this law for Sushi??
The shopping ended up at the Arc de Triomphe.
What a beautiful landmark to remember and honour those who
fought in both the French Revolution and WWI.
But wait… what is going on with the two dudes on the bottom left side???
We ended the night with a meal in the Latin Quarters of
Paris with Matt’s cousin Allan and his girlfriend Eva. Had an excellent Greek
meal and a couple of bottles of wine.
Not a shabby start to a week in Paris eh?
